Staircase Newel Posts & Accessories

Our staircase installations include Newel Posts (Newels), which anchor the staircase railing and are the primary stylistic elements of the balustrade. They appear in an endless variety of styles, but the most common types available today are made of wood and are categorized as either “solid” or “box” type.

Solid newel posts are just that – solid pieces of wood (although some are laminated) that are milled or turned on a lathe for a decorative profile. They are typically mare slender than box types and often have square ends, a turned midsection, and an ornamental top. A volute newel is a traditional style consisting of a central solid newel supporting a scrolling railing end and surrounded by a column of balusters.

Box newels are hollow wood boxes topped with a molded wood cap and sometimes a finial ornament. The classic box is four-sided and may have embellishments such as flutes, chamfered corners, or levels of applied moulding. Some newel designs combine a box-style base with a turned solid post.
